Job Description

TOWNSHIP SUPERVISOR

General summary

Under the general direction of the Township Board, of which the Supervisor is the Chairperson, is responsible for the general management of the Township and performs a variety of Township functions to meet the needs of the Township residents

Typical Duties:

  1. Serves as the Chairperson of the Township Board which is responsible for all activities and decisions of the Township.
  2. Is responsible for preparing the annual Township budget for approval by the Township Board and administers the budget throughout the fiscal year to assure compliance.
  3. Supervises a number of Township employees including, but not limited to, the Police Chief, any other appointed department heads, and may delegate tasks and follow up to assure completion of assigned duties.
  4. Has extensive direct contact with the citizens who have complaints and problems and attempts to resolve those problems.
  5. Has responsibility for assessing all the taxable property of the Township, or for assuring that the assessment is properly carried out by others, and signs the tax roll which must be presented to the Board of Review. Serves as Secretary to the Board of review.
  6. Assures that the Township ordinances are administered and enforced.
  7. Monitors the activities of the Planning Commission and other Boards and Commissions.
  8. Performs a variety of public relations functions such as interviews with the news media and attending various public functions.
  9. Consults regularly with various Federal, State, and local government representatives to find solutions to problems and to conduct Township business or gain the information where the welfare and interest of the Township may be affected.
  10. May consult with a variety of consultants such as attorneys, engineers, auditors, etc., regarding Township business.
  11. Performs a wide variety of other related administrative and legal functions as necessary, or as otherwise directed by the Township Board.
